THE NEW SAD
This is the new sad
Same as the last one
I thought you would understand
I thought you would be more fun
But you're not
It's my addiction
Same as the last one
My favorite affliction
I thought I'd just turn and run
But I can't
This is the new sad
So what can you say?
This unending tale is told
At least three times a day
This is the new sad
Same as the last
Forwards and backward again
My future still is my past
This is the new sad
So try not to look
All of my shame is here
In this overdue book
This is the new sad
So what can you do?
Another hole to mend
Another sock that's worn through
This is the new sad
Same as the last
This is probably as close to a big prog rock epic. There's a lot of this that has been part of my internal personal listening library for years. The ending instrumental guitar segment at the end was the first thing that I recorded for this album when I started this whole process in late January 2022. The whole final 3 minutes of the song is a rock reimagining of two songs I had previously written for marching band. Portions of the rest of the song has been bouncing around my head for the last 4 years. I can still see the shower from when I worked out the segment that goes from 3/4 to 4/4.
Ultimately, the song is about depression. I've been living with it for over 30 years, and sometimes it feels like you are just doing a dance where you go from one medication to another to another... One form of therapy to another... You try this. You try that. You jump through this hoop. You try and rationally view how you are doing. Are you doing better? Are you feeling better?
Or is it just a new coat of paint on the same old shit?
